The Stavropegic Monastery of Apostolos Varnavas (or Barnabas) is found on the west of Ammochostos and it is grounded from 474 - 491 A.D. by the emperor Zinonas.
The Apostle Varnavas, or how people knew him, Joseph, is believed to be an Apostle since he is one of the 70 chosen of Christ sent to the nations to preach His Evangel. His name “Varnavas” means “son of consolation”. He founded the church of Cyprus and had a terrible end since he was stoned to death.
In the Gospel which is attributed to the Apostle Barnabas states that Jesus escaped crucifixion and Judas was crucified in his place.
In 477, after the vision of Anthemos, the Archbishop of Cyprus at the time, the tomb of Apostle Varnavas as well as his chest, holding Matthew’s Gospel in his crossed hands.
