From the early years of cosmogony, the water was the most basic resource on which the existence of any living organism is based. The gods made sure that Earth was covered at its most with water. They decided that mountains should store large quantities of water in their bowels, which then, returns to nature through their cracks.
They made sure that every natural source of water had a guardian angel. They created the Naiades. The nymphs of springs and rivers. Those who were the daughters of Ocean, lived in the forests and mountains, near the sources and made sure that water never ends in them.
The island of Cyprus, was blessed by the Gods with many such sources. From the highest peak, Mount Olympus, to the coast, you will find hundreds. Some are great sources to form headwaters and others are small and hidden amidst unspoiled and trackless forests.
While approaching the mouth of a source, you see a Miracle taking place before you. The miracle of life. The water, which for years "travelled" through the bowels of the earth in total darkness, peering with momentum from the mouth of the source and "comes alive" as a creek or river as it continues its course in the light.
In the village of Choirokoitia, belonging to the province of Larnaca, there is a small chapel, built in 1790 and is dedicated to Agia Paraskevi. In the same area, a myth or more likely a fairy tale, being told by grandparents to their grandchildren, mentioned a source of drinking water and freshwater. A headwaters whose water turned the valley green, has created a small stream and watered the orchards of the people. Someday, so suddenly, the headwaters stopped giving water. The valley dried and orchards were abandoned. And the people have found other sources of drinking water.
The centuries passed, the headwaters got lost beneath the earth and their existence passed into the realm of fantasy and fairy tale.
The tale was kept alive as it passed from generation to generation, reaching up to the present day. With the difference that it is no longer a tale. It is reality. The headwaters are there.
In the years that followed the construction of the small church, it was "forgotten" because it was away from the village and quite inaccessible. The relentless weather conditions caused major damages to it.
Five months ago, its residents decided to fix it. They went to the site and began construction work. Then, at a point southwest of the Church, only 20 meters away, the earth began to "throw up" water. A lot of water. The people were excited that the tale they grew up with was not a fairy tale but a real story. They built a faucet out of stone with a huge mouth, where the water flows from. "Kefalovriso Agias Paraskevis" was created.
The Naiad Nymphs of Cyprus, once again, did a great job, the one assigned by the Gods.
