Villages in Cyprus - Meneou, Larnaca

If we want to talk about the community of Meneou, we should first read the fairytale of Cinderella very carefully. This is how the transformation of the small village to the one a visitor sees today looks like.

Meneou is built 11 kilometres west of the city of Larnaca and until a few years ago it was a small community of farmers. The industriousness of the residents, combined with the great areas of flat and fertile land that they had, transformed their community to a beautiful town of 1600 residents in a few years.

The development of land was done very carefully and it did not affect the natural environment at all. On the contrary, the green areas have increased greater than the houses that have been constructed. The development at a low level has “matched” with nature, giving Meneou an enviable image (the highest construction is the Holy Church of Agios Panteleimonas). Many streets that take you to the beach are planted with cypresses, that create a fantastic view to the eyes of every visitor.

The salt lake at the seaside is only 50 metres away from the sea and has a forest of eucalyptus trees on the west and the south as a background as well as numerous high cypresses, while further away Stavrovouni dominates the area with its monastery. The great aeolic park of Tersefanou integrates perfectly into the fantastic view that the visitor of the lake sees. Thousands of birds live, feed and overwinter on its shores, at the same time when the aeroplanes that take off the one after the other from the nearby international airport of Cyprus, offer the observer a different and pleasant view.

The progressive community of Meneou, after the Turkish invasion, hosted hundreds of our displaced compatriots, thus sharing with them all the benefits that the land gave them. The greatness of the hospitality of the residents of Meneou did not stop at this point.

A great area of arable land was donated to the refugee corporation of Nea Salamina of Ammochostos, where they built courts for their teams to train. At a central point, opposite the Municipal park “Kameiros”, another refugee corporation found shelter, this also from the district of Ammochostos. It is the 123rd corporation of scouts.

The main church is dedicated to Agios Panteleimonas. It is built opposite of the elementary school of Meneou, and with its size, it is visible from many points of the community.

On the road leading to Larnaca on the east, and the community of Kiti on the west, the visitor has the possibility to buy fresh fruits and vegetables as well as many other kinds of horticulture, products that are cultivated by the residents of Meneou. The hole image takes you to good old times when the producer was responsible to provide the consumers with his products right away.

Unfortunately, Meneou disposes of a small beach.  A small part of it is organised and provides a lifeguard during the summer months. The beach area has been greatly developed over the last few years. Great touristic houses have been built and thus covered a big part of it. With a very smart and pioneering design of houses, they closed access to the beach by vehicles, leaving access points to the beach only for pedestrians. Dozens of paved passages planted with trees cross them and end up at the beach. This is a possibility that you will not find at all of our beaches.

The visitor that would like a calm, idyllic place that would provide him with all the facilities necessary for a comfortable and relaxing day at the sea, should visit Meneou.
