The chapel of Panagia Eleousa is built in the centre of the Turkish Cypriot village, Kivisili.
The village was not settled by Christians, so they came from the closest village every Sunday to perform the liturgy. During the rest of the days, the candles were lit by the Muslim residents of the village. This was happening until 1973. After 1974, the time during which the Turkish Cypriots left from the village, refugees from the occupied areas of Ammochostos (Famagusta) (mainly from Voukolida), settled in Kivisili, so the church was reopened.
At the same time, conflict arose between the refugees in Kivisili and the residents of Alethriko, about who would be in charge of the church. This disagreement, exists even today, despite all the efforts made by different factors, but also the Archbishop himself.
