The church that is dedicated to Panagia Odigitria in Skarinou was grounded in 1950 and after 3 years of hard work by the settlers of the village, it was inaugurated for the first time. It is a big Church and about 500 believers can go to worship simultaneously.
In the progressive community of Skarinou, the church from the inside cost a lot of money.. Money that had been obtained, since they paid the undertaker with… carobs, that, in that period were considered to be “black gold”. The settlers paid one million two hundred thousand Cypriot pounds (1 pound=1.71 euros) in 1950.
Unfortunately, as you can observe in the pictures, after only 60 years, the church confronts, probably a very big problem. On all of its perimeter, at about two metres from its base, the irons that support it are uncovered, and are exposed to weather conditions. If they remain as such, soon the problem will become insuperable and it is probable that the church will have the same fate as the older one that existed on the east side of the village.
