Within the old “centre” of the village of Episkopi and its settlements in its northwest areas, that were built back when the need to house our displaced compatriots arose, there was a big empty space.
This is the space where the community hall, an amphitheatre and a sports court were built. Southwest of this area, there is a relatively recent church. It is dedicated to Agios Spyridonas. It is not a big Church. In terms of architecture, it is the same as the chapel found in the centre of the community, in the honour of Ypapanti Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin).
This church would not have been built if some facts had not happened.
A few years ago, in the place of the church, there was a huge, old Terebinth tree. Next to it there was a rectangular stone with a big hole in the middle of it. Rumours say that whoever tried to pass through the hole, passed onto the other side miraculously.
This area was claimed by different political domains of the community that was looking for land to construct partisan associations. This adversity made some people dry up the tree. Being covered in the dark, they put poison on the roots of the tree, resulting to it being dried up.
A crew came to deroot the dead tree and while the area was excavated, they discovered the foundations of a hidden paleochristian Church whose existence no one knew about.
After this, peace came upon the residents and wiser decisions were taken. This place was excavated so as to bring up to the surface the foundations of the old Church and next to it a new church would be constructed based on the old one’s architectural style.
With the help of the Metropolis of Limassol, the new Church was built and dedicated to Agios Spyridon since it is believed that the old one was also dedicated to this Saint.
