There are some stone bridges in Cyprus that are amazing monuments in terms of engineering. Some are with an arch, and some with two or more arches. The ones with two arches are called “diplogefira” (double bridges).
A double bridge of this kind, built of stone, is found at the river of Vasiliko and it connects the road that takes you from Akapnou to Vikla and Klonari. It is lost in the reeds and the wild plantations and it is almost unknown to the majority of those using it to cross the river of Vasiliko.
It is built in the past century, with carved stone at the point where the arches are formed and with irregular stone at its rest, placed with extreme workmanship. Its peak exceeds 20 metres of height and the two arches together “spread” to an area greater than 40 metres. Unfortunately the visitor cannot see and admire this creation. The only way to see it is through the riverbed of Vasiliko, once you pass the huge reeds.
The river’s water continues to flow through the western arch of the bridge all year round along with the aquatic trees that cover the shores of the riverbed, thus forming magnificent pictures.
When approaching the riverbed of Vasiliko, attention is required due to the dense plantation, and it is better to avoid doing so until someone who is responsible, to “extricate” it from the reeds.
