In Mesa potamos, or “potamos tis Arkolachanias”, a few metres from the picnic area having its name, the water flows on huge gabbro rocks, making a lot of noise, and it is transformed into waterfalls. The biggest one has a height of seven metres.
The waterfalls are accessible from the picnic area of Mesa Potamos. Just before crossing the bridge connecting the river’s shores, on your left, there is a narrow, descending path. The first 50 metres are normal steps, followed by another 50 with a smooth surface. Another hundred follow but they are very steep and downhill.
There is also access to it from another point, a hundred metres before the camping place of Iera Mitropoli Kitiou (Diocese of Kiti). It is the only point of the street that takes you from Saittas to the Monastery of Timios Prodromos and that has a widening in the road where 3-4 cars may park. From there on, follow the opposite direction of the flow of the river by foot, and in five minutes you will find yourselves at the first big waterfall. The journey is smooth at all its length.
Do not stay at the big waterfall. Carry on walking upstream of the river and you will see just as beautiful landscapes with small, continuous waterfalls.
The Pines dominate the area, and on the lower levels of the forest, the national tree of Cyprus, Latzia (golden oak) is dominant. Next to and in the riverbed, the aquatic trees prevailed, such as the Platanus and the Alder trees.
The beauty of the waterfalls is greater due to the gabbro rocks found all along the length of the riverbed. They are big, shiny rocks and the river flows between them over millions of years, eroding them until they became round and smooth.
