The church of the Apostolon Petrou kai Pavlou (Apostles Peter and Paul) is found in the centre of the village of Asgata. It is a single aisled basilica, built in 1865 with a belfry with three arches and bells.
In the church’s yard you will find the monument as well as the bust of the Hero of the village, Georgios Ch. Katsari, that was killed in Pachyammos in Tylliria on August 8th, 1964 as he fought for his religion and his homeland.
The visitor has no access to the monument of the community since the church committee makes sure that the external entrance to the church’s yard stays locked up.
The belfry is very high and has its own history that goes back to the Othoman period. The settlers wanted to built a belfry worthy enough to stand next to the church but they did not have the necessary amount of money to do so. It was when the Turkish tax collector arrived to the village to collect the taxes. When he was done with that, he asked a villager to show the way to him to the next village.
The route that the tax collector had to follow, compulsorily went by the Mersina river that was inundated at the time. He decided to swim in order to cross over. This decision was fatal as he drowned.
The person that showed the way to him noticed him, ran over and grabbed the sack with the money from the taxes. With his hands filled with money, he went back to the village and announced that he had the money they needed to construct the belfry.
