On the southern slope of Troodos, among the green Pine tree forest, there is a Monastery of Mesa potamos dedicated to the memory of Timios Prodromos. It is a male monastery and a small group of monks lives in it.
During its 900 years of existence, the Monastery suffered difficult periods of time, that caused its abandonment by the monks. The few buildings that composed it have been ruined.
The beautiful landscape, that is part of the most beautiful forests of Cyprus, continued to act as a pole of attraction of Cypriot excursionists. Mesa potamos, as well as other natural sources that gushed in the area, gave the visitors many hours of calmness, in and around the ruins of the Monastery.
After the year 2000, the Monastery was reconstructed and staffed with a small number of monks. Upon entering the Monastery, you will see the stone built Church having the form of a single aisled Basilica with a gabled roof, covered with tiles. In the forecourt, under the leaves of the high platanus trees, the worshipper may have a seat and the monks will treat him with coffee, original village crackers that they make themselves, and traditional Cypriot sweets. In the absolute silence provided by the Monastery, the only sounds that can be heard are the tweets of the birds.
Just a hundred metres south of the Monastery, you will find the picnic area of Mesa potamos, where you can spend your time far away from the noise of the town and 200 metres southeast of the area, you will find the beautiful waterfalls of Mesa potamos.
The believer or the visitor of the Monastery of Timios Prodromos in Mesa potamos, has multiple benefits to gain from this trip. Apart from the very rich history of the Monastery, he will find himself in a very beautiful, dense and green forest. The river with its waterfalls will surprise him in a positive way.
