The picnic area “Marathos” is found on a slope of Troodos at an altitude of 1300 metres. It was created by the Department of Forests of Cyprus and it has been equipped with all the facilities a Cypriot or foreign visitor would wish for.
On the middle of a steep slope, the Department of Forests succeeded to create a magnificently beautiful picnic area. It has many levels, connected by stone steps. In the centre there is a natural source of potable cold water. The strange thing about it is the water of the faucet which is so cold that the excursionists put their drinks under it to keep them cold. You cannot leave your fingers under the water for more than a few seconds. This source, due to its altitude, is probably the first enriching source of the river Setrachos that crosses the valley of Marathasa.
The picnic area of Marathos may serve 300 people at a time. Its location is covered in pine trees and the environment that was created by the water of the source, where ivies climb on the trees, thus transforming the forest into a… tropical one, as well as the cool climate that you will find there even in the hot summer months, make it a favourite destination for thousands of people.
There are a few plants and trees that are protected in the area, this is why you should respect them.
To access the picnic area, take the direction from Prodromos to Pedoulas. At 1300 metres, take the exit on your right that guides you to Kakopetria. At 4 thousand metres you will see the picnic area on your left.
We are simply reminding you, even though there are quite a few signs of the Department of Forests in the area, that you should gather your garbage and throw it into the green bins. The picnic areas firstly belong to each Cypriot and after to the visitors of Cyprus. Respect the area that is hosting you and that is providing you with all the facilities so that you as well as your family and friends have a nice time.
