Occupied Nicosia

Villages in Cyprus - Occupied Nicosia, Nicosia

Added on: by

Five million years ago, Nicosia emerged from the seabed between the Troodos and Pentadaktylos mountains, thus joining them creating the Mesaoria plain.

It was the first area to be settled by humans in Cyprus. Being far from the shores, they were not threatened by the raiders that visited the island. With the spread of people, many Kingdoms were created on the coasts, developing strong nautical bonds.

Ledras (this is how it was called back then) was far away from the sea and this is why it was a weak Kingdom with no reign, and lived under the yoke of the powerful coastal kingdoms of Cyprus.

Upon the arrival of the Romans and the destruction of the Kingdoms, Nicosia took advantage of its geographical position and became the administrative center of almost all the conquerors.

It became the capital city of Cyprus in 1960.  In 1963 it was divided into two after the parliamentary rebellion from the Turkish Cypriot deputies. A “line” on the map cut the Capital into two. The ink was green, and this is how the line was named the “green line”..

No one knows whether the placement of the Turkish settlement on the north side of Nicosia was random or if this action was the first step towards the division of the island that was completed a few years later, caused by the Turkish invasion.

The occupied Nicosia, filled with Greek Orthodox monuments and memories, will never become familiar with the occupiers. Nicosia will wait for time to stop it from being the only divided capital of the so-called European Union.
