During the Byzantine period, a sanctuary was found a little bit out of the village of Nikitari by people from a Peloponnesian area called Asini. The area they chose to build their settlement was found between among a narrow valley that was covered by pine forests. The valley was penetrated by a small river. All of this happened in the 11th century.
During the same period, in the same area, a byzantine Church was built by the Master Nikiforos Ischyrios and was dedicated to Panagia Forvion, and this is how the church was named “Panagia Forviotissa”. Today it is also known as “Panagia Asinou”.
The Church is part of the world heritage and it is found on the list of UNESCO for its unique frescoes.
The church is always open for worshippers and for visitors. Even though it is one of the most important monuments of Cypriot history and is under the control of the Department of Antiquities, the entrance is free.
The area is a destination for worshipping, exercise and rest for thousands of Cypriots and foreigners. There is a picnic area in the forest that offers some facilities to the excursionists and a path of nature for those who want to exercise.
