On our way from Nicosia to Palaichori, 100 metres from the right exit towards Agrokipia and Mitsero, you will meet the dam of Akaki-Malounta. It is built on the river Akaki and has a storage capacity of 2 million cubic metres of water. The percentage is very small compared to the total capacity of the river that exceeds 12 million cubic metres annually.
It has an area of 180000 square metres and at overflowing periods it is divided into two basins of water thus offering a wonderful view to the visitor.
The spillway has a length of 59 metres and it also participates in the beauty of the landscape with the deafening noise of water that flows into it.
The dam has hundreds of visitors per day that come to admire the place with the deep gorges from one side and the lake that it forms on the other.
The dam is there to enrich the aquifers of the village of Akaki, therefore there is no overflow during the months of summer, there is a controlled flow of water.
