When the department of forests received the non fertile area where the National Forest park is found today, on their effort to create a big forest, it was necessary that they join two torrents, the Vathis (deep) and kalogeros (monk), and to gather water with an earthen fence in order to irrigate the forest. This is how a big lake between the municipalities of Aglantzia, Strovolos, Latsia and Geri was created in 1962.
We can find a great number of migrating birds, that are attracted by the lake during their trips from and to Europe. The lake created by the dam, in combination with the great area of the forest, changed the climate of the area to a cooler one during the months of summer.
