On the coastal area of Kissoneraga that has the name of “Potima” is where the community beach with the same name is found. It is an organised beach and it offers all kinds of facilities to all swimmers. It is staffed with a lifeguard during the months of summer, or for as long as the tourist period lasts.
It is a sandy beach at its most. On the rest of it, the shore is covered in small shingles. The waters are quite deep from the very first metres of the shore and this is why swimmers should be very careful, even though there is a lifeguard.
Despite the fact that even today the beach of Kissonerga is found in areas of land covered with banana trees, the place is not the same as just a few years ago. Back then when the whole area from the outskirts of Chloraka up until Agios Georgios Pegeias were covered in banana tree orchards and unique vines, such as the species of Soultanina.
The landscape we have today has nothing to do with what we could see back then. Today the area is “naked”, dry and grassy. The government used to pay farmers and banana producers for many years, in order to take care of their fields and their banana trees that made up a unique and tropical for Cyprus ecosystem.. what changed this policy?
Thousands of visitors came to the area just to see the trees that produced these tasty fruit. From the point where you would go downhill the seaside towards Agios Georgios Pegeias, you would have the blue colour of the sea on your left that was offered to you by the community beach of Kissonerga and on the right you would have the green of the banana trees.
All of this transformed the beach of Kissonerga to a real paradise on earth.
