After the Turkish invasion and the displacement of 20000 people, a great problem on the waterworks system was created. Cyprus went on with the construction of dams and reservoirs in its different rivers.
One of these dams is that of Asprokremos, the second largest in the country after the Kourris dam in Limassol.
Having a depth of 53 metres, it forms an artificial lake with a total volume capacity of 52 million cubic metres of water. These enormous quantities of sweet water are used for orchard irrigation in Paphos district. The water is transferred in canals towards different directions.
