The dam of Kannaviou is ranked fourth among the dams of Cyprus in terms of capacity, and second in terms of height. It has a capacity of 18 million cubic metres of water. It was a height of 70 metres and its dyke has a length of 600 metres. It is found at a distance of about forty kilometres from the town of Paphos. It is built along the river of Ezousa.
It has been constructed in a different way from the one the other dams of Cyprus were built, and this is why its “behaviour” is a subject to observation by the Water Development Department of the island.
Its reason of creation is to provide the communities surrounding the dam with potable water, as well as the controlled flow of the river Ezousa towards the valley with the same name, to enrich the aquifers, from the village of Kannaviou until the coastal area of Acheleia.
The dam of Kannaviou at good periods, talking in terms of hydrology, overflows and its basin creates a beautiful lake with branches. You can observe the dam from different locations that allow you to have unique views.
The point where the river enters the dam is very interesting. The older ones probably remember the road that passed under the bridge, before the dam was built, where the first journey from Stavros tis Psokas through the valley of Ezousa ended.
The wonderful pictures you will have from the shores, will be completed by the swarms of storks and other species of birds that live by its waters.
